For David Cross, the anxiety dreams have begun. And that’s a good thing.

Ask a question of David Cross or Bob Odenkirk — say, how’s it going? — and either can answer for both of them. “Collectively, we’re good,” Mr. Cross said in a recent telephone conversation with this comedy duo that pioneered a style of rapid-fire, absurdist and acidly cynical sketches on the HBO series, “Mr. Show With Bob and David,” which ran from 1995 to 1998.

PARK CITY, UTAH: The phrase “equal-opportunity offender” is tossed around with such shrugging carelessness that it’s all but lost its fangs; you mostly hear it used by shock jocks and racists. But it seems about the only appropriate way to describe the authorial voice of stand-up comic, Mr. Show co-creator, and, now, feature filmmaker David Cross, whose debut picture Hits premiered last night at the Sundance Film Festival. In it, Cross faces the rather challenging task of sustaining a...

The first joke you ever told: When I was about eight or nine I came up with this little gem: “When a baby boy is born how can you tell if it’s Jewish? Comedian David Cross's IMDb resume is sort of staggering. There's irreverent, beloved TV comedy ("Mr. Show With Bob and David", "Arrested Development"), modern indie classics (Waiting for Guffman, Ghost World), and a fair amount of big-budget schlock (Scary Movie 2, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel). Between all that film and television work, the 46-year-old still spends time making people laugh while standing on a stage right in front of them.
