David Cross hears your outrage over politics, but that’s not what he’s all about (The News & Observer)

David Cross hears your outrage over politics, but that’s not what he’s all about (The News & Observer)

by Brendan O'Malley August 03, 2018

Conceptual, cerebral and occasionally controversial, the comedy of David Cross is a genuine commodity in these days of the early 21st century. Cross is best known for his TV work – HBO’s “Mr. Show” and the hall-of-fame sitcom “Arrested Development” — but he’s also a veteran stand-up comedian with a reputation for razor-sharp topical runs and vicious political riffs. The real thrill with Cross, however, is his apparently hardwired ability to combine trenchant observational humor...

A rapid series of comical noises: A conversation with comedy genius David Cross (Smoky Mountain News)

by Brendan O'Malley August 01, 2018

If there was a single voice of reason amid the bombardment of deafening noise in the digital age — of mass media, of used car salesman politicians, of everyday informed/misinformed folks rambling on (and on) — David Cross might be that single voice. Whether through his iconic stand-up routines, his groundbreaking sketch comedy series “Mr. Show” or his immortal role as Tobias Funke in the sitcom “Arrested Development,” Cross is a bonafide comedy legend. For...

David Cross on his cathartic new tour, why he’s quitting Twitter, and that infamous NYT article (Bad Feeling Magazine)

by Brendan O'Malley July 13, 2018

David Cross has had a difficult year. First came the allegations of racist behaviour from comedian Charlene Yi last October, and then the now-infamous New York Times piece on Arrested Development in May, in which Cross and his male co-stars were accused of not supporting their castmate Jessica Walter as she broke down describing the emotional abuse she received from series co-star Jeffrey Tambor. Rather than deny the criticism, Cross has owned up to it,...

David Cross on how to properly offend the masses (Detroit Metro Times)

David Cross on how to properly offend the masses (Detroit Metro Times)

by Brendan O'Malley July 11, 2018

David Cross is cursing his cab driver under his breath. He has been dropped off two blocks from where he needs to be and where he needs to be is pretty important, as his day is meticulously scheduled down to the penciled-in post-gym-class pizza slice between a meeting with an architect and his next interview. This type of scrupulous planning may seem out of character for the 54-year-old comedian and self-described "New York Hollywood liberal...

David Cross thinks Trump may be comedy-proof. But his supporters aren't (The Cap Times)

by Brendan O'Malley July 11, 2018

David Cross called his 2016 comedy special and tour "Making America Great Again!," because, of course, it made sense at the time to get the Donald Trump references out of the way before Election Day. Oh, well. Now that Trump is president, the stand-up comedian is figuring out how to deal with Trump in his act, even though he doesn't consider himself a political comedian. On the new "Oh, Come On" tour, which comes to...

Dispatches From The Front Lines: A Quick Hello from The Road (July 11, 2018)

by Brendan O'Malley July 11, 2018

Hey guys, checking in after a couple of weeks into the tour.Started in New England where a lady and her date brought their two sons to sit in the front row of the Boston show. These kids were like 9 years old. What?! If you've seen the show you know that I have a whole bit about getting a colonic that has, let's say, a bit of "performance" to it. Who brings nine year olds to a comedy show?! Pretty...

An Urgent Statement from Alex Azar, Head of HHS, Regarding the Golden Ticket

by Brendan O'Malley July 09, 2018

Good people of North America - utterly confounding news! The GOLDEN TICKET for my (one would presume) upcoming shows remains unclaimed! What the devil?! We know that the hats and bundles sold out (in under 24 hours mind you) and that in one of those packages lies the Golden Ticket in all of its golden glory. What are you waiting for? What is your reason for keeping it hidden? If you are afraid of tainting it with human hands then wear...
